West Side Story History
While the Golden Age of entertainment had generated many delightful, happy musicals for the stage, silver screen, and television, a project was unveiled in 1957 that was to be truly revolutionary, the brainchild of Director/Choreographer Jerome Robbins.

That project was West Side Story.

With a plot line adapted from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, author Arthur Laurents set the story in the underbelly of New York City, where new immigrants of the day and the grandsons of immigrants were spilling each other's blood for control of every crumbling sidewalk, just three miles from the Theatre District. The production would deliver entertainment with relevant social commentary.

To create the music, Robbins passed over many Tony Award winning teams in favor of Broadway outsiders-- a composer who had attained near superstar status in the world of symphonic orchestration, Leonard Bernstein, and a then-unknown 25 year old lyricist by the name of Stephen Sondheim. The resulting music was different, complex and powerful.

An all-time favorite production of many, West Side Story is a challenging show to present at the high school level, requiring capable dancers of both sexes as well as versatile singers. Yet it is perhaps most appropriately presented on the high school stage, where the youthful characters and emotional extremes can be depicted with little need for interpretation. The San Mateo High School artistic direction team of Brad Friedman, Robyn Tribuzi, Shawn Reifschneider and Attilio Tribuzi are confident this generation of performers will sparkle in the opportunity to present this classic.
